      <image:title>Audio - The Nightingale of Iran - Episode 1 - The Time Machine</image:title>
<image:caption>Sisters Danielle and Galeet Dardashti grew up in a Jewish American family band: The Dardashti Family. They sang international folk music in 12 languages – English, Hebrew, Yiddish, Ladino, Greek, Spanish, French, Japanese and more – but never any songs in Persian. This seems odd to them since both their father and grandfather were famous Iranian singers during the “Golden Age” for Jews in Iran, before the Islamic Revolution. Danielle and Galeet make a discovery that takes them back in time, and helps them find answers to their questions about why their family left Iran and abandoned their Iranian identity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Audio - The Nightingale of Iran - Episode 2 - Singing in the Dark</image:title>
<image:caption>Danielle and Galeet's grandfather Younes Dardashti grew up an orphan in Tehran's Jewish ghetto. He was gifted with a gorgeous voice, but had a difficult childhood. He lived with an abusive uncle who forbade him from singing. In his late teens, he left his uncle's house, got a job with the Iranian Railroad and, years later, he married Houri Aziz-Zadeh. In the 1940s, life changed rapidly for the Jews of Iran - a new Shah granted equal rights to Jews, women, and other marginalized groups. Jews could move out of the ghetto into neighborhoods integrated with Muslims. One night, Younes found himself at a party attended by Qamar-ol-Moluk Vaziri, a famous female Muslim singer. Suddenly, the power went out. And in the dark and quiet, Younes started to sing. This was the moment that everything changed, and he became The Nightingale of Iran.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Audio - The Nightingale of Iran - Episode 3 - The Tehran Teen Idol</image:title>
<image:caption>Danielle and Galeet’s father, Farid Dardashti, was born in Tehran in 1942, the oldest of Houri and Younes Dardashti’s five children, all of whom had natural musical talent. Farid’s gorgeous voice kept earning him invitations to perform, but his parents didn’t want him to pursue music. To make them proud, he applied to study architecture in America. While waiting for his visa and acceptance to college, he got offered his own weekly show singing on Iranian TV. He quickly became a teen idol. But when his visa came through, he left the country as planned – and never once considered staying to grow his fame as a singer. This didn’t make any sense to Danielle and Galeet. But that’s because they were missing an important piece of the story.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Audio - The Nightingale of Iran - Episode 4 - Ashkenormalization</image:title>
<image:caption>On his way from Iran to America, where he planned to study architecture in college, Danielle and Galeet’s father Farid spent the summer in Israel. While walking down a Tel Aviv street one day, a man recognized him from Iranian TV and invited him to sing at an event that week. The night Farid sang, a family of visiting Americans heard him, and it changed the course of his entire life. Once he arrived in the United States, a new pursuit pulled Farid further and further away from his Iranian identity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Audio - The Nightingale of Iran - Episode 5 - Savta’s Dream</image:title>
<image:caption>Houri Dardashti, Danielle and Galeet’s grandmother, had long dreamed of moving to Israel from Iran. But life was improving for Jews in Iran, and her husband Younes had become a famous radio star there. So it seemed to her that the dream of moving to Israel wasn’t going to happen. But after Farid left Iran for college in America, one by one his siblings started leaving Iran for Israel. And eventually, Houri and Younes moved to Israel, too. But Younes, the Iranian star, felt like an outsider in Israel.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When people asked “Where are you from?” Danielle was never sure if they wanted to know the places she’d lived or whether they just thought she looked foreign. She didn’t know many families like hers in mainstream Jewish America. These days, there’s growing awareness about the diversity of the Jewish experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Audio - The Bay - How the Pandemic Opened the Door for Organizing Bay Area Strippers</image:title>
<image:caption>After the pandemic forced strip clubs in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood to close and protests against police violence erupted in the summer, many dancers were laid off and started to work virtually instead. This created an unexpected opportunity to push for more worker power among strippers, and fight back against issues like sexual harassment, racism, and a culture of fear around speaking out. And now, some dancers are hoping that this organizing will lead to better working conditions in strip clubs when the pandemic eventually ends.</image:caption>

<image:title>Audio - The Bay - Why the Attempt to Recall Gov. Gavin Newsom Has Gained Traction</image:title>
<image:caption>Organizers behind the attempt to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom believe they will collect enough verified signatures to trigger a special election later this year. It’s going to take a lot to actually unseat Newsom in a recall election and replace him with a Republican. But this campaign is already a lot bigger than any other effort to recall a California governor since 2003. So, why has it gained traction this time?</image:caption>

<image:title>Audio - The Bay - ‘A Big First Step’: Bay Area Cities Are Rethinking Single-Family Zoning</image:title>
<image:caption>The single-family neighborhood has been foundational to American housing policy for decades. It’s also been a tool to keep Black and brown people out of homeownership, and is one reason why there isn’t nearly enough housing overall. This policy has deep roots in the Bay Area. But now, a handful of cities are rethinking it, and allowing developers to build “fourplexes” in these areas. A change like this won’t solve the housing crisis overnight, and it won’t bring down rents unless it’s paired with other protections. But it is a big first step.</image:caption>

<image:title>Audio - The Bay - Navigating This Fragile and Hopeful Moment in the COVID-19 Pandemic</image:title>
<image:caption>On Monday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new guidelines for fully vaccinated people. New, confirmed cases of COVID-19 are down in California. We have three vaccines in the U.S. This is all good news. But the virus and its variants are still among us, and a vast segment of the population is still waiting their turn for the vaccine. So how should we navigate this in-between period without sabotaging the progress we’ve made?</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - I’m Asal Ehsanipour, a freelance audio reporter, producer, and story consultant in the San Francisco Bay Area. Most recently I was a producer for the ABC News audio team, where I made podcasts in conjunction with Good Morning America. Prior to that I was a senior producer at the Los Angeles Times, and a reporter/producer for KQED Public Radio, KALW Public Radio, and The Double Shift podcast. My work has also been featured on PRI’s The World, KPCC’s Take Two, and more. My stories have taken me on a private tour of Guittard’s chocolate factory, behind the scenes of a Fleetwood Mac tribute band, and to the first Black church west of the Mississippi. I love to report character-driven stories about identity and how we understand our place in the world. My work has been recognized by the Ambie Awards, Signal Awards, the IDA Documentary Awards, the Best of the West Journalism Contest and the Society of Professional Journalists, among others. I have guest lectured at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and presented my reporting on the Bay Area’s history of chocolate for SF City Guides. I’ve also spoken about my Iranian Jewish identity at San Francisco’s Contemporary Jewish Museum’s Veiled Meanings exhibition and at schools around the Bay Area.</image:title>
